MOISSANITE

Moissanites are the best alternatives to a Diamond. Comprised of carbon and silicon, Moissanite is one of the most robust and hardest known elements on earth. They are manufactured while considering the environment. They are engineered to endure the test of time. Due to their higher Refractive Index, they sparkle more and the best thing, a Moissanite gemstone will cost you only 1/10th of the price of a diamond.

Laboratory produced Moissanites are made in such a way that they give the illusion of closeness to diamonds, but they are very different from real diamonds both in appearance and composition. Even other properties like endurance, brilliance, and colour of the two gems are pretty dissimilar.

Mainly composed of carbon and silica it has an incredible hardness of 9.25 making them second hardest material after diamonds. Thus they are not prone to scratches or become hazy with wear or dull with time or lose their visual attributes.

Only a laboratory can tell the difference between a Moissanite and a Diamond.

In 1905, this mineral was named Moissanite after the Nobel-Prize winning scientist Henri Moissan in his honour.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF MOISSANITE?

The most important aspects of a jewel are its beauty, durability and rarity. The following information describes how a gem can have these properties:

Beauty

The following properties define the beauty of a jewel:

  • Brilliance:- cutting designs are used to attain the brilliance of a jewel that uses the jewel's refractive index. It is measured by the quantity of light that enters the jewel and is reflected.

  • Fire:- The dispersion of a jewel coupled with the design results in the breaking of light rays into the spectrum of colours. It is scaled by the amount of coloured flashes.

  • Luster:- Luster is the amount of light that is reflected from the surface of the jewel.

Rarity

Rarity is the availability of a jewel. Naturally occurring quantities of Moissanite are so little that they can't be used for commercial purposes.

Durability

The durability of a jewel is decided by its hardness or resistance to scratching.

Moissanite is second in hardness after diamond and incredibly sturdy and is thus extremely durable.

Superior Heat Resistance

Moissanite has heat resistance properties higher than other jewels and is used for making fine jewellery.

Moissanite Clarity

The pioneers of Moissanites, Charles & Colvard, employ gemologists certified by the Gemological Institute of America to grade their Moissanites. Each Charles & Colvard gemstone is analysed by these specialists using a 10x jeweler's loupe for any inclusions that may affect its optical performance or price.

Moissanite Color

Charles & Colvard strictly refrain from classifying or grading Moissanites according to their colours.

Moissanite Shapes

Charles and Colvard produce Moissanites in various shapes. One can buy according to their requirement and preference. It is available in 13 different shapes.

Of all the popular shapes, round shape moissanite optical properties carry the greatest brilliance.

WHAT ARE THE VARIETIES OF MOISSANITE?

There are three varieties of Moissanites available:-

  1. Forever One Moissanite:- Charles & Colvard Forever One Moissanite is an achievement of art, science and sustained efforts. The structural arrangement of this specific moissanite material is what yields its unprecedented, colourless (D-E-F) quality. While it's optical and hardness traits remain the same, it is the stacking of SiC substance that makes Forever One moissanite different from others.

  2. Forever Brilliant Moissanite:- Forever Brilliant Moissanite falls within the near-colourless G-H-I range. It was developed through advances to the crystal growing process from the original brand of Charles & Colvard. It offers subtle colour shades in the J – K range.

  3. Forever Classic Moissanite:- With constant efforts, Charles & Colvard developed the second grade of Forever One, in G-H-I quality which was named as Forever Classic. Possessing the same optical properties of the DEF quality moissanite, this one yields a warm tint.

At MyRatna, we deal only in Moissanite produced in the USA. We strongly advise against the purchase and usage of Indian and Chinese Moissanite because of their sub standard cut, colour, clarity and other quality factors.

HOW ARE MOISSANITE MEASURED?

It is recommended to measure a Moissanite in millimetres only because it is lighter by 15 - 18% in weight than a diamond. For instance, a diamond which measures 6.5 mm in diameter weighs 1 carat, but a Moissanite of the same size will weigh around 0.87 carats.

Moissanite Price Guide

Because Moissanite has a lower density than diamond, you are going to get a bigger stone; about 10% bigger for the carat weight. Typically Moissanite is sold by mm size rather than carat weight for this reason. Charles and Colvard were the first to market the lab-grown Moissanites, and they are still the most exclusive because they are not just the originators, but they also provide the best quality. Please be aware that some dishonest people in the Indian and Chinese market will try and pass it off as diamond or will sell it to you for carat weight. So we strongly suggest you buy only the American Moissanite.

FAQ

1.What Makes Moissanites Sparkle the Most?

Because of its extraordinary refractive index (BRI), Moissanites sparkle even more than Diamonds. The BRI of moissanite ranges from 2.65 to 2.69, meaning it displays more brilliance than diamond (with a BRI of 2.42) or any other gemstone.

2.Why is Moissanite measured in mm Instead of Carat Weight?

Moissanite is 10% lighter than diamond, and hence it is measured in millimetres and not in carats, which is a unit of weight. For example, a 9 mm moissanite would be similar to a 3-carat diamond but will weigh slightly less.
